Description
By Vinous in 2019 (NM92-94)
The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes 1er Cru, which was de-stemmed, has a clean, precise, quite mineral-driven bouquet, not as powerful as the Aux Brûlées, yet full of energy at this stage. The palate is well balanced with firm tannin but offers plenty of vivacious red fruit laced with white pepper and bay leaf. This is very expressive and surprisingly persistent, exerting fine grip toward the finish. Jean-Nicolas Méo suggests that the vine age is now creating a more structured wine than previously, and I concur. Excellent.

The 2017 les Chaumes from Méo-Camuzet was showing very well indeed at the time of my visit, with more of the reserved personality found in the Boudots than the already seductive side of the vintage exemplified by the Murgers. The bouquet is pure and classy, offering up a promising mix of black raspberries, cassis, dark chocolate, lovely minerality, gamebird and cedar. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, pure and suave on the attack, with a sappy core, fine soil signature, ripe, moderate tannins and a long, focused and tangy finish that will be plenty complex once it blossoms and starts to drink with generosity. Fine juice. 2026-2060+.

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes offers up appealing aromas of red cherries, cocoa nib, Asian spices and rose petal, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and layered palate with a tangy core of fruit, fine tannins that are a little emphasized by the wine’s recent racking, and a long, vibrant finish. It displays excellent energy for the site and should develop well in bottle. Longtime fans of Domaine Méo-Camuzet will be delighted by the 2017 vintage at this address, as the domaine has produced an attractive collection of charming, supple wines that are beautifully defined by site but which will also be unusually approachable out of the gates. While many of the wines had been racked not long before my tasting, they were still expressive, and I suspect they will prove even more satiny and gourmand in bottle. Méo began picking on September 6, finishing just over a week later. Like many others, he reports that the wines fleshed out considerably during élevage and is thinking of bottling them a little earlier than usual.
