Description
By Jeannie Cho Lee in 2015 (JCL97)
Tasted blind; she highlights balance and “complex layers of cedar, spices, cassis and seductively ripe tannins,” calling it “a wine to savor now” with further ageing potential.
By Wine Enthusiast in 2001 (WE92)
From Robert Mondavi and Eduardo Chadwick, a Chilean producer (Errázuriz), this wine is a blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon and 16% Carmenère. The color is inky dark, and it smells young and intense, almost fiery—there’s a suggestion of charcoal and embers. Massive fruit explodes in the mouth, but it’s not a fruit bomb; it’s much too sophisticated for that. Oak is fancy but not pronounced. Its aging timeline should be similar to that of a great Bordeaux.
By Vinous in 2022 (JH92)
The 1997 Seña, vintage number three, was made during a warm, dry year. The blend is 84% Cabernet Sauvignon and 16% Carménère and it was aged for 16 months in 43% new French barrels. Garnet with a dark, brick dust sheen. The warm climate resulted in a very ripe profile… the nose has faded a little and features dried flowers, and potpourri but falls short of fig. Terse in feel, the alcoholic richness is countered by mild freshness before the finish of sweet spices.
