Description

By John Gilman in 2013 (JG95)

The 2011 Bâtard-Montrachet is also outstanding, offering up a classic bouquet of peach, orange, a youthful touch of pink grapefruit, excellent minerality, a bit of iodine, orange blossoms and new oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and rock solid at the core, with laser-like focus, superb grip and exceptional backend energy on the perfectly-balanced and very refined finish. Domaine Leflaive’s Bâtard-Montrachet is always one of the most elegant examples of this grand cru and the refinement of the 2011 vintage dovetails brilliantly with the style predilections of the team at the domaine. Great wine. inger adding a bit of fire at the front of the tongue, then attractive stony notes finally revealed on the finish and the aftertaste. Superb – for me perhaps superior to the 2012.

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Bâtard-Montrachet 2011 from Anne-Claude Leflaive is slightly deeper in color than its peers. The nose is a little austere at first, but it unfolds nicely with impressive mineral (slate and flint) scents, well defined and poised. The palate is well balanced with a keen thread of acidity. There is a bright citric heart to this Bâtard-Montrachet with fleeting touches of nectarine and citrus lemon joining the edgy mineral finish. This is a classy Grand Cru – regal but not imposing.

This is laced with floral, citrus, apple, honey and baking spice aromas and flavors. Takes on a linear shape, remaining persistent and building to a fine, long aftertaste of mineral and spice.

There is just enough reduction present to warrant decanting this should you decide to try a bottle young though I would strongly advise allowing this at least 6 to 8 years of bottle age first as it would be a waste given how much potential this wine possesses. There is a wonderfully silky texture that adds interest to the tautly muscled and powerful big-bodied flavors that explode on the palate staining and notably dry finish. This is seriously impressive but like the 2012 version it’s finer than it usually is.
